Tiger Shroff: from Heropanti to one of Bollywood’s biggest action stars
Martial arts, gymnastics and dance turned Jackie Shroff’s son into Hindi cinema’s most athletic leading man. A look at Tiger Shroff’s life and films.

When Tiger Shroff made his debut in 2014, many viewers knew him only as the son of a famous actor. Within a few years he had built his own identity as Hindi cinema’s most athletic star — a performer whose flying kicks, flips and dance moves became the selling point of his films. This article looks at his life and career.
A film family and a fighter’s training
Tiger Shroff was born Jai Hemant Shroff in Mumbai on 2 March 1990. His father, Jackie Shroff, was one of the leading Hindi film stars of the 1980s and 1990s, and his mother, Ayesha Dutt, is a film producer. His younger sister, Krishna Shroff, runs a fitness business.
He studied at the American School of Bombay and spent much of his childhood training — in martial arts, gymnastics and dance. That discipline became the foundation of his career. In 2014 he was awarded an honorary fifth-degree black belt in taekwondo.
Heropanti: a different kind of debut
His first film, Heropanti (2014), was an action romance set in rural north India. Audiences were struck by his fight sequences and dancing, and he won several best debut awards, including the IIFA award for Star Debut of the Year.
The Baaghi franchise
Baaghi (2016), a martial-arts action film, confirmed him as an action hero. It became a franchise, followed by Baaghi 2 (2018), Baaghi 3 (2020) and Baaghi 4 (2025). The films are built around elaborate fight choreography in the style of East Asian action cinema, something that had been rare in mainstream Hindi films.
He also tried other genres: the superhero comedy A Flying Jatt (2016) and Munna Michael (2017), a dance film inspired by his admiration for Michael Jackson.
War and the big leagues
His biggest success came with Siddharth Anand’s spy thriller War (2019), in which he played a young agent opposite Hrithik Roshan. The film’s action and dance face-off between the two stars made it one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2019.
Later films include Heropanti 2 (2022), the futuristic action film Ganapath (2023), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (2024) with Akshay Kumar, and Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again (2024). Not every film was a commercial success, but he remained one of the few Hindi stars able to anchor large-scale action films.
Beyond acting
Shroff has released several music singles, including “Unbelievable” (2020) and “Casanova” (2021), and he provided the Hindi voice of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). He co-founded the mixed martial arts promotion Matrix Fight Night in 2019 and launched the football club Mumbay FC in 2024. His fitness routines are followed by millions of young people online.
What sets him apart
Hindi cinema has always had action heroes, but most relied on stunt doubles, editing and star persona. Tiger Shroff’s appeal lies in visible physical skill: audiences know that many of the moves on screen are his own. That has influenced a generation of younger actors to train in martial arts and gymnastics, and pushed Hindi action films towards more ambitious choreography.
