Abhinav Bindra is a former sport shooter who won the 10 metre air rifle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, India’s first individual Olympic gold medal. He was also world champion in 2006 and has since worked on athlete welfare and sports science.

Biography

Early start

Bindra grew up in a well-off Punjabi family; his father built him a shooting range at their home near Chandigarh. He competed at the 1998 Commonwealth Games aged fifteen and at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, the youngest Indian participant there.

World champion

In 2006 he became India’s first world champion in shooting, winning the 10 m air rifle title in Zagreb despite a back injury that had threatened his career.

Beijing gold

On 11 August 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, he scored a near-perfect 10.8 with his final shot to win gold in the 10 m air rifle — the first individual Olympic gold for India. He competed again at London 2012 and finished fourth at Rio 2016 before retiring.

After shooting

Bindra wrote the autobiography A Shot at History, runs a foundation that supports sports science and athlete rehabilitation, and served on the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission. He received the Khel Ratna in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2009, and was awarded the Olympic Order in 2024.
