Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most celebrated actors in the history of Indian cinema. Rising to fame as the “angry young man” of 1970s Hindi films, he has worked for more than five decades and has hosted the quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati since 2000.
Biography
Early life
Bachchan is the son of the Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. He studied at Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, and worked for a shipping company in Calcutta before moving to Bombay to try his luck in films.
The angry young man
After a debut in Saat Hindustani (1969) and a string of flops, his performance as a brooding police officer in Zanjeer (1973) made him a star. Films such as Deewaar and Sholay (both 1975), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) and Don (1978) defined the era, and his screen persona of the working-class rebel made him the biggest star in Indian cinema.
In 1982 he was gravely injured while filming a fight scene for Coolie; the nation followed his recovery closely. He briefly entered politics as MP for Allahabad (1984–87).
Second innings
After a difficult period in the late 1990s, when his production company ran into financial trouble, Bachchan reinvented himself as host of Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2000 and with character roles in films such as Mohabbatein (2000), Black (2005), Paa (2009) and Piku (2015). He has won four National Film Awards for Best Actor and received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honour, for 2018.
Personal life
Bachchan married actress Jaya Bhaduri in 1973, shortly after their hit Zanjeer; she later became a Samajwadi Party member of the Rajya Sabha. Their son Abhishek is an actor, married to Aishwarya Rai, and their daughter Shweta Bachchan Nanda is a writer. The family home, Jalsa in Mumbai, draws crowds of fans every Sunday when he comes out to greet them.
Legacy and influence
Bachchan’s screen persona of the 1970s — the brooding, working-class outsider fighting a corrupt system — captured the frustrations of an era and made him the defining Indian star of his generation. His deep baritone has narrated films, documentaries and public campaigns, including the polio eradication drive. He has worked with nearly every major Hindi director, from Prakash Mehra and Yash Chopra to Manmohan Desai and Shoojit Sircar, and remains active in his eighties in films such as Kalki 2898 AD (2024).
