Biography
Engineer and banker
Bhagat studied mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi and management at IIM Ahmedabad, then worked as an investment banker in Hong Kong and Mumbai. He wrote his first novel while still in banking.
Bestsellers
Five Point Someone (2004), a comic story of three underperforming students at IIT, was an instant success with young readers. It was followed by One Night @ the Call Center (2005), The 3 Mistakes of My Life (2008) and 2 States (2009), based on his own inter-community marriage. His books were priced low and reached readers who did not usually buy English novels.
Books to films
Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots (2009) was inspired by Five Point Someone, and Kai Po Che! (2013), 2 States (2014) and Half Girlfriend (2017) were adapted from his novels. He has also written screenplays.
Public voice
Bhagat writes newspaper columns on politics, education and youth, gives motivational talks and has a large social-media following. Time magazine named him among the 100 most influential people in 2010.
