Devendra Fadnavis is the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, serving his third term since December 2024. A former Mayor of Nagpur, he was the first BJP leader to become Chief Minister of the state, in 2014.
Biography
Early career
Fadnavis grew up in Nagpur in a family associated with the Jana Sangh and the RSS; his father Gangadhar Fadnavis was a member of the state legislative council. He took a law degree from Nagpur University and became a city corporator at 22. In 1997, at 27, he was elected Mayor of Nagpur, one of the youngest mayors in India. He has represented Nagpur in the state assembly since 1999.
Chief Minister
After serving as state BJP president, he became Chief Minister in October 2014 when the BJP emerged as the largest party — the first BJP Chief Minister of Maharashtra and only the second Chief Minister to complete a full five-year term. His government launched the Jalyukt Shivar water-conservation programme and the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway.
After the 2019 election he was briefly sworn in again for three days before the Maha Vikas Aghadi formed the government. He was Leader of the Opposition until 2022 and then Deputy Chief Minister under Eknath Shinde.
Third term
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won a landslide in the November 2024 assembly election, with the BJP alone winning 132 of 288 seats, and Fadnavis was sworn in as Chief Minister on 5 December 2024.
Policies
Fadnavis’s governments launched the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan to make villages drought-free, the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway, the Mumbai Metro expansion and the coastal road, and in 2018 introduced reservations for the Maratha community, later struck down by the Supreme Court. He is regarded as one of the BJP’s sharpest legislators and administrators.
Personal life
He married Amruta Ranade, a banker and singer, in 2005; they have a daughter, Divija. He studied law at Government Law College, Nagpur, and a diploma in business management. His father Gangadhar Fadnavis was a Jana Sangh and BJP leader in Nagpur.
