Gautam Adani is the founder and chairman of the Adani Group, an infrastructure conglomerate whose businesses include ports, airports, power, renewable energy, cement and media. He is one of the richest people in India, and his group has faced high-profile allegations, which it denies.
Biography
Early career
Adani left college in Ahmedabad and moved to Mumbai in 1978, where he worked as a diamond sorter. He returned to Gujarat to run a family plastics business and in 1988 founded a commodities trading firm that became Adani Enterprises.
Early life
Gautam Adani was born in Ahmedabad into a Gujarati Jain family of modest means; his father was a small textile trader. One of eight children, he studied commerce at Gujarat University but left before graduating to seek his fortune in Mumbai’s diamond trade.
Building the group
His company began operating the port at Mundra in Gujarat in the late 1990s, which grew into India’s largest private port. The Adani Group expanded into power generation, coal, renewable energy, airport management, cement (acquiring ACC and Ambuja Cements in 2022) and media. Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in 2022.
In January 2023 the US short-seller Hindenburg Research accused the group of stock manipulation and accounting fraud, and in 2024 US prosecutors announced bribery-related charges against Adani and associates. The group has denied all the allegations.
Infrastructure empire
From the Mundra port, the Adani Group expanded to operate more than a dozen ports in India and abroad, became India’s largest private power producer and one of the world’s biggest renewable-energy developers, and since 2019 has run several major airports, including Mumbai. It also built the Carmichael coal mine in Australia, which drew protests from environmental groups.
Personal life and philanthropy
Adani was trapped inside the Taj Mahal Palace hotel during the 2008 Mumbai attacks and escaped unharmed. His wife, Priti Adani, a dentist, chairs the Adani Foundation, which works in education, health and livelihoods. In 2022, on his 60th birthday, the family pledged ₹60,000 crore to charity.
