Hima Das is a sprinter from Assam who in 2018 became the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the World U20 Championships. She holds the Indian national record in the 400 m.
Biography
Early life
Hima Das grew up in Kandhulimari village near Dhing in Assam, the youngest of five children of rice farmers Ronjit and Jonali Das. She played football with boys in the paddy fields before a physical education teacher at the local Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, impressed by her punctuality and determination at inter-school camps, persuaded her to take up sprinting.
World junior champion
After running the 400 m and relay at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she won the 400 m at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, on 12 July 2018 in 51.46 seconds — the first Indian ever to win a track gold at a world-level championship.
Asian Games and records
At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta she set a national 400 m record of 51.00 in the heats and lowered it to 50.79 seconds in the final, winning silver. She then won gold in the women’s 4×400 m relay and in the first-ever mixed 4×400 m relay at the Games. In July 2019 she won five races in Europe within a month, including 200 m titles in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Beyond the track
Das received the Arjuna Award in 2018 and became UNICEF India’s first youth ambassador. Under Assam’s sports policy she was appointed a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Assam Police.
Injuries and later career
After her breakthrough season, Das battled recurring back and hamstring injuries that limited her racing in major championships. She was also provisionally suspended in 2023 over missed doping-test whereabouts filings. Despite the setbacks, her rise from a village in Assam made her one of the most recognised Indian athletes and an inspiration for young sprinters in the Northeast.
