Biography
From kickboxing
Lovlina grew up in a village in Golaghat district, Assam, where her father ran a small business. She started in Muay Thai kickboxing, like her twin sisters, before a Sports Authority of India coach spotted her at school trials and encouraged her to switch to boxing.
International success
She won bronze medals at the World Championships in 2018 and 2019 in the welterweight division, becoming one of India’s leading boxers.
Tokyo bronze
At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, she reached the semi-finals of the women’s welterweight event and won bronze, India’s third Olympic boxing medal and the first from Assam. Her village was given a new road in celebration.
World champion
Moving up to the 75 kg middleweight division, she won gold at the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi and Asian Games silver later that year. She received the Arjuna Award in 2020 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021.
