R. K. Narayan was one of the leading early writers of Indian fiction in English. His gently comic novels and stories, set in the fictional south Indian town of Malgudi, won him readers worldwide, and The Guide won the Sahitya Akademi Award.

Biography

Early life

Narayan was raised largely by his grandmother in Madras while his father, a headmaster, worked in Mysore. He was an indifferent student and briefly a teacher before deciding to write full-time, a choice his family initially found hard to accept.

Malgudi

Narayan grew up in Madras and Mysore. His first novel, Swami and Friends (1935), was published in Britain with the help of Graham Greene, who became a lifelong champion. It introduced Malgudi, the small town where nearly all his later fiction is set.

Style

Narayan wrote in simple, precise English with gentle irony, depicting ordinary people — students, shopkeepers, guides, astrologers — whose ambitions collide with fate and the small dramas of Malgudi. Graham Greene called him the novelist he most admired in English. His wife Rajam’s early death in 1939 deeply affected him and inspired The English Teacher.

Works and honours

His novels include The English Teacher, The Financial Expert, The Guide (1958) — which won the Sahitya Akademi Award and was adapted into the film Guide — and The Man-Eater of Malgudi. His stories became the television series Malgudi Days (1986), illustrated by his brother, the cartoonist R. K. Laxman. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1964 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2000, and was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha. He died in Chennai on 13 May 2001.

Legacy

Narayan is considered one of the founding figures of Indian fiction in English, alongside Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao. His Malgudi stories remain staples of Indian school reading, and the 1986 television adaptation Malgudi Days, directed by Shankar Nag, is fondly remembered by generations of viewers.
