Ranveer Brar is a chef from Lucknow who has worked in India and the United States and become one of India’s most popular food television personalities, as a host of food and travel shows and a judge on MasterChef India.
Biography
Early life
Ranveer Brar grew up in a Sikh family in Lucknow, fascinated by the city’s food culture and especially its kebabs. As a teenager he worked with a kebab vendor, Munir Ustad, whom he credits with his first real culinary training. Despite initial resistance from his family, he enrolled at the Institute of Hotel Management, Lucknow.
Hotel career
Brar started with the Taj group, including the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi, and in 2001 helped launch restaurants at the Fort Aguada Beach Resort in Goa. In 2003 he became executive chef at the Radisson Blu in Noida — one of the youngest in the country at the time.
America and back
He moved to Boston, where he helped open the Franco-Asian restaurant Banq, named Wallpaper magazine’s best new restaurant in the world, and later worked as a corporate chef there. Returning to India, he became senior executive chef at Novotel Mumbai Juhu and went on to create restaurants such as English Vinglish and TAG GourmArt Kitchen in Mumbai.
Television and writing
Brar has hosted food and travel shows and served as a judge on MasterChef India. His YouTube cooking channel is one of the most popular in India. He has written books on food and has acted in film and web series.
Cooking philosophy
Brar describes himself as a storyteller of food, blending recipes with history, regional culture and personal anecdotes. He champions Indian street food and home cooking as much as fine dining, and his YouTube channel, where he cooks everyday Indian dishes with detailed explanations, has made him one of the most popular food creators in the country. He has also judged MasterChef India alongside Vikas Khanna and Garima Arora.
