Rohit Sharma is an India opening batsman known for effortless big hitting. He is the only player with three double centuries in one-day internationals, including the record score of 264. As captain he led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, and Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles.
Biography
Early career
Rohit grew up in Mumbai, where a coach spotted his batting and arranged a scholarship to a school with a strong cricket programme. He made his India debut in 2007 and was part of the team that won the first T20 World Cup that year, but took several years to establish himself.
The opener
Promoted to open in one-day cricket in 2013, he transformed his career. He scored 209 against Australia in 2013, a world-record 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 and 208* in 2017 — the only player with three ODI double centuries. At the 2019 World Cup he made a record five centuries.
Captain
Rohit led Mumbai Indians to IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. He became India’s white-ball captain in 2021 and later Test captain, took India to the 2023 World Cup final and won the 2024 T20 World Cup, after which he retired from T20 internationals. He also led India to the 2025 Champions Trophy and retired from Test cricket in 2025.
Recognition
He received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna (now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna) in 2020. He is married to Ritika Sajdeh; they have a daughter and a son.
Why they matter
Rohit Sharma is the rare cricketer whose career peaked after thirty. For years he was the gifted batter who underachieved; promotion to opener in 2013 turned him into the most destructive one-day batter of his time. As captain he combined that power with a selfless, attacking approach at the top of the order, accepting lower personal averages to give India fast starts. Winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy ended an eleven-year wait for ICC titles and secured his place among India’s most successful captains.
