Sabyasachi Mukherjee is a Kolkata-based fashion and jewellery designer whose eponymous label, launched in 1999, is synonymous with Indian bridal couture. He is known for championing traditional textiles and craftsmanship.

Biography

Early life

Sabyasachi Mukherjee comes from a middle-class Bengali family from Kankinara, West Bengal, and went to school at Sri Aurobindo Vidyamandir in Chandannagar. He graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in the summer of 1999 and, four months later, started his label with a team of three people.

Breakthrough

In 2001 he won the Femina British Council award for India’s most outstanding young designer, which took him to an internship in England with designer Georgina von Etzdorf. He showed at India Fashion Week in 2002 and in 2003 won the Grand Winner Award at the Mercedes-Benz New Asia Fashion Week in Singapore. His 2003 collection Kora, using unbleached handwoven fabric and kantha embroidery, signalled his commitment to Indian crafts.

International runways

He presented collections in Kuala Lumpur, Miami, Milan and New York, and his clothes were sold at Browns and Selfridges in London. Over time he built a luxury business around lavish bridal wear, fine jewellery and accessories rooted in handloom, embroidery and Indian heritage.

Costume and celebrity

He has designed costumes for films including Black — sharing the National Film Award for Best Costume Design — Baabul, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Guzaarish, Raavan and English Vinglish. His bridal outfits for weddings such as those of Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and Priyanka Chopra became cultural moments, and he has collaborated with international brands including H&M. He is a board member of the National Museum of Indian Cinema.

Philosophy and influence

Sabyasachi has championed India’s textile heritage, employing thousands of artisans and weavers, and speaking out against cheap imitation and fast fashion. His stores, designed like antique-filled heritage homes, and his use of vintage textiles, Calcutta nostalgia and maximalist jewellery have made his label one of the most recognisable luxury brands from India. He has also become known for his outspoken views on Indian identity and craft.
