Sachin Tendulkar is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history. Over 24 years he scored 100 international centuries and more runs than anyone in both Test and one-day cricket, and in 2014 became the first sportsperson to receive the Bharat Ratna.
Biography
Early years
Tendulkar was coached at Shivaji Park in Mumbai by Ramakant Achrekar and attracted attention with a record 664-run partnership in a school match. He made his Test debut for India in Karachi in November 1989 at the age of 16.
Career
Over 200 Tests and 463 one-day internationals he scored 15,921 Test runs and 18,426 ODI runs, both records, and became the first player to score 100 international centuries. In 2010 he made the first double century in men’s ODI cricket. He played in six World Cups and, in his final one, was part of the team that won the 2011 World Cup in Mumbai.
Batting
Tendulkar combined classical technique with attacking strokeplay, and his straight drive became one of cricket’s most famous shots. He scored centuries against every Test-playing nation of his era and was especially celebrated for innings such as his 1998 “Desert Storm” centuries against Australia in Sharjah and his 98 against Pakistan at the 2003 World Cup.
Retirement and honours
He retired after his 200th Test in November 2013. The following year he became the youngest person and the first sportsperson to receive the Bharat Ratna. He was a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 2012 to 2018 and was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2019.
Personal life
He married paediatrician Anjali Mehta in 1995; their son Arjun is also a cricketer. His autobiography, Playing It My Way (2014), became a bestseller. His farewell speech at the Wankhede Stadium after his 200th Test in November 2013 is one of Indian sport’s most emotional moments.
Legacy
Tendulkar’s career coincided with the rise of satellite television and India’s economic liberalisation, making him the first sporting superstar of the new India; his batting was followed by hundreds of millions of fans, who nicknamed him “the God of Cricket”. Since retiring he has worked on causes including sanitation, children’s health and sport, and promoted the Indian Super League as a former co-owner of Kerala Blasters.
