Asaduddin Owaisi is the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and has represented Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha since 2004. A barrister by training, he is one of the most prominent voices on minority rights in Indian politics.
Biography
Early life
Owaisi is the son of Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, who led the AIMIM and represented Hyderabad in Parliament for six terms. He studied at Nizam College, Hyderabad, and qualified as a barrister at Lincoln’s Inn in London.
Political career
He was elected to the Andhra Pradesh assembly from Charminar in 1994 and 1999. In 2004 he succeeded his father as MP for Hyderabad, a seat he has won in every election since, and in 2008 he became president of the AIMIM.
Under his leadership the party, long confined to Hyderabad, has won seats in Maharashtra and Bihar. In Parliament he is known for detailed, combative speeches on constitutional and minority-rights issues. His brother Akbaruddin Owaisi leads the party in the Telangana assembly.
Political positions
Owaisi presents himself as a defender of the Constitution and of the rights of Muslims, Dalits and other marginalised groups. He has strongly opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and the triple talaq law, among others, often citing constitutional provisions in Parliament. Critics accuse him of divisive politics; his party argues it gives Muslims their own political voice.
Family and party
The AIMIM has been led by the Owaisi family since 1958, when his grandfather Abdul Wahed Owaisi revived the party. His father, Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, represented Hyderabad for six terms. His brother Akbaruddin Owaisi leads the party in the Telangana assembly. The party also runs educational and health institutions in Hyderabad, including a medical college.
Family and style
Owaisi is the son of Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi, who led the AIMIM and represented Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha for six terms; his younger brother Akbaruddin leads the party in the Telangana Assembly. A barrister trained at Lincoln’s Inn, Owaisi is known as a sharp parliamentary debater and received the Sansad Ratna award for his performance in Parliament.
