J. Jayalalithaa was a leading Tamil film actress who became general secretary of the AIADMK and served six times as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu between 1991 and 2016. Known to supporters as “Amma”, she was one of India’s most powerful regional leaders.
Biography
Early life
Jayalalithaa’s father died when she was two, and her mother, Vedavalli, moved to Madras to act in films under the name Sandhya. A brilliant student at Church Park Presentation Convent, she had hoped to continue her studies, but at 15 was persuaded to enter films to support the family. She was trained in Bharatanatyam and classical music.
Film career
Jayalalithaa was born into a Tamil Iyengar family and raised largely in Chennai by her mother, the actress Sandhya. She entered films as a teenager and starred in about 140 Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films between the mid-1960s and 1980, many of them opposite M. G. Ramachandran (MGR), who became her political mentor.
Leader of the AIADMK
Jayalalithaa joined MGR’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1982 and became its propaganda secretary and a member of the Rajya Sabha. After MGR’s death in 1987 she fought a succession battle and emerged as the party’s undisputed leader, becoming general secretary in 1989.
Chief Minister
She first became Chief Minister in 1991 and returned to office in 2001, 2002, 2011, 2015 and 2016. Her governments were known for wide-reaching welfare programmes, including the cradle baby scheme against female infanticide and subsidised Amma Unavagam canteens.
Her career was also marked by corruption cases. A 2014 conviction in a disproportionate-assets case forced her from office until the Karnataka High Court acquitted her in 2015. In 2016 she became the first Tamil Nadu leader in decades to win consecutive terms. She died in Chennai on 5 December 2016 after a long illness.
Final illness and succession
In September 2016 she was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai, where she remained for 75 days; she died on 5 December 2016 and was buried beside M. G. Ramachandran at Marina Beach. A commission later examined the circumstances of her treatment. After her death the AIADMK went through a prolonged leadership struggle.
