Yogi Adityanath is a Hindu monk and BJP leader who has been Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, since 2017. He is the head of the Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur and represented Gorakhpur in the Lok Sabha for five terms.
Biography
Early life and monastic life
Born Ajay Mohan Singh Bisht in a village in the Garhwal hills, he graduated in mathematics from Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. In the 1990s he became a disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath of the Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur, taking the name Yogi Adityanath, and succeeded him as the temple’s mahant (head priest) in 2014.
Member of Parliament
Elected to the Lok Sabha from Gorakhpur in 1998 at the age of 26, he won the seat five times in a row. He founded the Hindu Yuva Vahini youth organisation in 2002 and became known as a firebrand Hindutva leader in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Chief Minister
After the BJP’s landslide in the 2017 state election, Adityanath was chosen as Chief Minister. In 2022 he became the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in decades to be re-elected after completing a full term, and he is now the longest-serving holder of the office.
His government has emphasised law and order, expressways, airports and investment summits, and religious tourism in Ayodhya, Varanasi and Prayagraj, which hosted the Maha Kumbh in 2025. Its policing methods, including demolitions of property belonging to accused persons, have drawn criticism from rights groups and courts.
Infrastructure and investment
His government has built expressways including the Purvanchal, Bundelkhand and Ganga expressways, new airports such as Kushinagar and the Noida International Airport project, and promoted the One District One Product scheme for local industries. Investor summits in 2018 and 2023 announced large investment commitments.
Religious tourism and controversy
Adityanath has prioritised development of Ayodhya around the Ram temple, the Kashi Vishwanath corridor in Varanasi and the Kumbh melas at Prayagraj. His government’s law-and-order approach has been popular with supporters, while critics, including rights groups and courts, have questioned police encounters and property demolitions, as well as his rhetoric. He also renamed cities including Allahabad (Prayagraj) and Faizabad (Ayodhya).
