Bhaichung Bhutia is a former striker and India captain regarded as the torchbearer of Indian football. In 1999 he became the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a European club, joining England’s Bury FC.

Biography

Career

Bhutia grew up in Sikkim and won a scholarship to Tashi Namgyal Academy in Gangtok. He began his senior career with East Bengal, the club he would rejoin four times, and also starred for JCT and Mohun Bagan. In 1999 he signed for Bury in England, becoming the first Indian to sign for a European club.

India captain

Bhutia formed a celebrated strike partnership with I. M. Vijayan and later captained India, winning the Nehru Cup in 2007 and 2009 and the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which took India to the 2011 Asian Cup. He retired from international football in 2011.

He received the Arjuna Award in 1998 and the Padma Shri in 2008. A stadium in Namchi, Sikkim, is named after him. He later entered politics in his home state.

At Bury

Bhutia’s move to Bury in 1999 made him the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a European club and only the second to play professionally in Europe. He spent three seasons with the English club before returning to India.

After football

Bhutia retired from international football in 2011 after many years as captain, and was given a farewell match against Bayern Munich in New Delhi in 2012. He founded the Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools for young players, has worked as a coach and administrator, and contested the 2022 All India Football Federation presidential election. In 2018 he founded the Hamro Sikkim Party in his home state. His refusal to carry the Olympic torch in 2008 in solidarity with the Tibetan cause made headlines.

Legacy

Bhutia is credited with raising the profile of Indian football in the 1990s and 2000s, when cricket dominated the country’s sporting attention. His move to England inspired a generation of Indian footballers to look abroad, and his school programmes and outspoken advocacy for better grassroots structures continue to shape the game.
