Princepal Singh is a power forward from Dera Baba Nanak, Punjab, who rose through the Ludhiana Basketball Academy and the NBA Academy to become the first NBA Academy India graduate to sign a professional contract, joining the NBA G League Ignite in 2020. He won the 2021 NBA Summer League title with the Sacramento Kings.
Biography
From volleyball to basketball
Singh grew up in Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab playing volleyball. In 2014 he went to Ludhiana to try out for a volleyball academy, but at 1.98 m (6 ft 6 in) he caught the eye of coach Jaipal Singh at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy, where he learned the game. A scholarship to the SPIRE Institute in Ohio fell through when his US visa was refused twice.
NBA Academy
He trained for 18 months at the NBA Academy India in New Delhi and in 2017 moved to the NBA Global Academy at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. In 2019 he was named MVP of the Indian Junior National Championship, scoring 40 points in the final, and helped Punjab win the senior national title and Khelo India Youth Games gold.
Professional career
In July 2020 he signed with the NBA G League Ignite, becoming the first NBA Academy India graduate to turn professional. He played for the Sacramento Kings’ team that won the 2021 NBA Summer League, and later signed a development contract with the New Zealand Breakers. A serious back injury in 2022 interrupted his career; he returned to play in Indian and overseas leagues from 2023.
Significance
Princepal Singh’s path — from a village volleyball player to the NBA Academy and the NBA G League — is seen as a test case for basketball development programmes in India, which aim to produce players capable of competing in the world’s top leagues. He has represented India at youth and senior level, including FIBA Asia competitions.
