Biography
Early life
Amjyot Singh Gill was born in Chandigarh to a sporting family: his mother Nirmal Kaur was an athlete, and his father Mohinder Singh, a Chandigarh Police sub-inspector, had played basketball for India. Amjyot was a cricket bowler until an injury in high school kept him off the field for three months; on his father’s advice he switched to basketball in 2007, despite admitting he did not even know the rules.
Rise in India
Within a year he was in the Punjab state and national under-16 teams and joined the Ludhiana Basketball Academy, which has produced many of India’s best players. He captained Punjab to a junior national title in 2010 and won the 2012 Senior National Championship. He later played for Tamil Nadu and became a regular for India at FIBA Asia Championships.
Professional career abroad
In 2015, with Amritpal Singh, he became one of the first Indian men to sign a professional basketball contract abroad, playing in Japan’s developmental league before joining Yokohama Excellence. In 2017 he moved to the NBA G League, playing for the Oklahoma City Blue and later the Wisconsin Herd — among the first Indians in the league. He also played for the Delhi Capitals in India’s UBA Pro league.
India career
A versatile forward who could shoot from outside and play near the basket, Amjyot was a key scorer for India through the 2010s, playing at multiple FIBA Asia Championships and the 3x3 game. He was part of the team that beat China for the first time at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, one of Indian basketball’s most celebrated results.
