Vishesh Bhriguvanshi is a guard from Varanasi who became India’s youngest basketball captain and has led the national team for over a decade. In 2017 he became the first Indian signed by Australia’s National Basketball League, joining the Adelaide 36ers, and he received the Arjuna Award for 2020.
Biography
Early life
Bhriguvanshi grew up in Varanasi in a family of educators — his father was a lecturer and his mother the principal of a government college. He started playing at the Varanasi under-13 district meet and progressed so quickly that he was called up to the senior India men’s team at 17, later becoming the youngest player to captain it.
National team
He made his senior international debut at the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship and has since played at nearly every major FIBA Asia event, including the 2011, 2013 and 2015 Asia Championships and the 2014 FIBA Asia Cup. At the 2016 FIBA Asia Challenge in Iran he averaged a career-best 16.9 points per game. Earlier, he helped India win 3x3 gold at the 2008 Asian Beach Games.
Club career
Bhriguvanshi has won domestic national titles with Indian Railways and became a brand ambassador for ONGC in 2011. In the 2017 UBA Pro Basketball League he averaged 30.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.2 assists for Bengaluru Beast, including a 57-point game against Hyderabad. In July 2017 he signed a training deal with the Adelaide 36ers, becoming the first Indian player in Australia’s National Basketball League.
Style and leadership
A quick, creative guard able to score and organise play, Bhriguvanshi has been India’s on-court leader for most of the past decade and a role model in Indian basketball. He was part of the Indian side that beat China for the first time at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship.
Recognition
He received the Arjuna Award for 2020. His story is told in the biography Vishesh: Code to Win by Nirupma Baghley.
