Dev Anand was a stylish Hindi film star of the 1950s and 1960s and co-founder of Navketan Films. Famous for his urbane charm in films such as Baazi, C.I.D. and Jewel Thief and for his acclaimed role in Guide, he kept making films until his death in 2011.
Biography
Early years
Dev Anand graduated in English literature from Government College, Lahore, and moved to Bombay in 1943, working as a clerk and in a military censor’s office. His first film was Hum Ek Hain (1946), and Ziddi (1948) gave him his first hit.
Navketan Films
In 1949 he founded Navketan Films with his elder brother Chetan Anand; younger brother Vijay Anand later joined as a director. Navketan’s Baazi (1951), directed by Guru Dutt, set the style of crime films with Dev Anand as a charming, westernised hero, followed by Taxi Driver, House No. 44 and C.I.D. (1956).
Guide
He won the Filmfare Best Actor award for Kala Pani (1958) and again for Guide (1965), Vijay Anand’s adaptation of R. K. Narayan’s novel The Guide, which is regarded as his finest work. Jewel Thief (1967) and Johny Mera Naam (1970) were big hits, and he directed Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), which introduced Zeenat Aman.
Evergreen
Known for his scarves, caps and quick, nodding delivery, he directed and starred in films into his eighties. He received the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002, and published his autobiography Romancing with Life in 2007. He died in London on 3 December 2011.
