Siddaramaiah is a Congress leader who served twice as Chief Minister of Karnataka, from 2013 to 2018 and from 2023 to 2026. A lawyer from a farming family, he has presented more state budgets than anyone in Karnataka’s history.

Biography

Early life

Siddaramaiah was born into a farming family of the Kuruba community near Mysuru and did not attend formal school until he was about ten. He earned a BSc and a law degree from the University of Mysore and practised law before entering politics.

Janata years

He was elected to the assembly from Chamundeshwari in 1983 and rose in the Janata parties, serving as Finance Minister and twice as Deputy Chief Minister (1996–99 and 2004–05). After being expelled from the Janata Dal (Secular) in 2005, he joined the Congress in 2006.

Chief Minister

Siddaramaiah became Chief Minister in 2013 and completed a full five-year term, only the second in the state to do so. His government introduced the Anna Bhagya free rice scheme and other welfare measures for disadvantaged groups.

After the Congress won the 2023 election he became Chief Minister again, implementing five “guarantees” including free bus travel for women (Shakti) and monthly support for women heads of households (Gruha Lakshmi). His second term ended in June 2026.

AHINDA politics

Siddaramaiah built his politics around AHINDA — a Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalits — positioning himself as a champion of social justice. As finance minister he presented more state budgets than anyone else in Karnataka’s history, and his welfare schemes such as Anna Bhagya (free rice) and Indira Canteens were widely popular.

Rivalry and controversy

His second term was marked by a long-running power-sharing rivalry with Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, and in 2024 by allegations related to land allotments by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to his wife, which he denied and which were investigated.
