Tanmay Bhat is a comedian, writer and YouTuber who co-founded the comedy collective All India Bakchod, which shaped Indian internet comedy in the 2010s. He later became a popular streamer and podcaster.
Biography
Early comedy
Tanmay Bhat began writing for television and doing stand-up comedy in Mumbai in the late 2000s, as English-language stand-up was taking off in Indian cities.
All India Bakchod
In 2012 he co-founded All India Bakchod (AIB) with Gursimran Khamba, Rohan Joshi and Ashish Shakya. Its sketches, such as Honest Indian Weddings and Bakchod Diaries, and topical satire attracted millions of viewers. The 2014 AIB Knockout roast with Bollywood stars was hugely watched and sparked complaints and police cases.
Break
In 2018 AIB stepped back from work after allegations of misconduct against members of the comedy scene, including criticism of how the group had handled them; Bhat stepped away from AIB, and the collective effectively disbanded.
Streaming
He returned through YouTube, streaming games and chess — including the charity series Comedians on Board with Samay Raina during the pandemic — and building a large following as a streamer, podcaster and investor in start-ups.
