Dhirubhai Ambani was a self-made entrepreneur who founded Reliance in 1958 as a small trading business and built it into India’s largest private-sector company. Reliance’s 1977 public offering brought millions of ordinary Indians into the stock market.
Biography
From Aden to Bombay
The son of a village schoolteacher, Ambani went to Aden at 16 and worked for the trading firm A. Besse & Co. He returned to India and in 1958 started a spice and yarn trading business in Bombay that became Reliance.
Building Reliance
In 1966 he opened a textile mill at Naroda near Ahmedabad and built the “Vimal” brand. Reliance’s 1977 initial public offering made it one of India’s most widely held companies, and its annual meetings filled stadiums. Through backward integration he moved into polyester, petrochemicals and finally oil refining with the Jamnagar refinery, commissioned in 1999. His methods and his ability to navigate the licence-raj era also attracted controversy.
He died in Mumbai on 6 July 2002. His sons Mukesh and Anil divided the group in 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
Equity cult
Reliance’s shareholder base grew to millions of small investors, many first-time buyers of shares, and its annual general meetings were held in football stadiums to accommodate them. This helped create an “equity cult” in India and made Reliance the first Indian private company to be included in the Forbes 500 list.
Controversy and legacy
His rise was marked by battles with rival industrialists and the press — most famously with Nusli Wadia of Bombay Dyeing and The Indian Express newspaper — and critics accused him of manipulating the licence system. Admirers saw him as a self-made outsider who built an industrial empire from nothing. The 2007 film Guru was widely seen as inspired by his life.
Legacy
Dhirubhai Ambani is regarded as one of India’s most influential entrepreneurs, whose rise from a village schoolteacher’s son to the head of India’s largest private company symbolised the possibilities of ambition outside established business families. The Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology in Gandhinagar is named after him.
