Dipa Karmakar is a former artistic gymnast from Tripura who became the first Indian woman gymnast to compete at the Olympics. At Rio 2016 she finished fourth in the vault, landing the dangerous Produnova vault, and brought gymnastics to national attention.
Biography
Flat feet
Dipa began gymnastics at six in Agartala under coach Bisweshwar Nandi. She had flat feet, usually a disadvantage for gymnasts, and spent years on exercises to build an arch.
Breakthrough
In 2014 she won bronze in the vault at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the first Commonwealth medal by an Indian woman gymnast. She became one of very few women to land the Produnova, a handspring double front somersault vault nicknamed the “vault of death”.
Rio 2016
At the 2016 Rio Olympics she became the first Indian woman gymnast to compete at the Games and missed a bronze medal in the vault final by just 0.15 points, finishing fourth. The performance made her a household name in India.
Later career
Injuries and a 21-month suspension for a doping violation interrupted her career. In 2024 she won the vault at the Asian Championships, India’s first gold at the event, and announced her retirement that October. She received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2016 and the Padma Shri in 2017.
