Biography
Trader
Kamath grew up in Bengaluru and began trading shares as a teenager. He worked night shifts at a call centre so he could trade during the day, and later worked as a sub-broker.
Zerodha
In 2010 he founded Zerodha with his younger brother Nikhil, charging a low flat fee per trade instead of a percentage. In 2015 it stopped charging brokerage on long-term share purchases altogether. Its Kite trading platform and simple design attracted young first-time investors.
Bootstrapped giant
Zerodha grew without venture capital funding and for years was India’s largest stockbroker by active clients, while remaining highly profitable. Kamath also set up Varsity, a free stock-market education platform, and Rainmatter, which invests in fintech and climate start-ups.
Personal life
Kamath has spoken publicly about health and fitness, including his recovery from a mild stroke in 2024. He funds climate, health and education causes through the Rainmatter Foundation.
