Sundar Pichai is the chief executive of Google and its parent company Alphabet. Born in Madurai and raised in Chennai, he joined Google in 2004, led the development of the Chrome browser and the Android platform, and became Google’s CEO in 2015.
Biography
Chennai childhood
Pichai grew up in a two-room flat in Chennai, where his father was an electrical engineer. He is said to have had a remarkable memory for telephone numbers. He studied metallurgical engineering at IIT Kharagpur, then took a master’s degree at Stanford University and an MBA at the Wharton School.
After working at Applied Materials and the consultancy McKinsey, he joined Google in 2004 to work on its search toolbar. He led the development of the Chrome browser, launched in 2008, which became the world’s most popular browser, and Chrome OS, and in 2013 took charge of Android.
Chief executive
Pichai became CEO of Google in 2015 when the company reorganised under the Alphabet holding company, and CEO of Alphabet as well in 2019. He has steered the company towards artificial intelligence, including the Gemini models, while facing antitrust cases in the United States and Europe.
Recognition
He received the Padma Bhushan in 2022. He is married to Anjali Pichai, whom he met at IIT Kharagpur; they have two children.
Why they matter
Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella together symbolise the rise of Indian-born engineers to the top of global technology. Pichai’s story — from a two-room flat in Chennai to running one of the world’s most valuable companies — is often cited in India as proof of what engineering education can achieve. His products, especially Chrome and Android, are used by billions of people, and as CEO he has steered Google into the race for artificial intelligence.
