Biography
Amazon to Flipkart
Bansal studied computer science at IIT Delhi and briefly worked at Amazon in Bengaluru, where he met Binny Bansal (no relation). In 2007 the two launched Flipkart as an online bookstore from a small Bengaluru flat.
Building Indian e-commerce
Flipkart expanded into electronics, fashion and almost everything else. It introduced cash on delivery, built its own delivery network and staged huge sales such as the Big Billion Days, adapting e-commerce to Indian shoppers who were wary of paying online.
Walmart deal
Sachin Bansal served as CEO and later executive chairman. In 2018 Walmart bought about 77 percent of Flipkart for around 16 billion dollars, then the world’s largest e-commerce acquisition, and Bansal sold his stake and left the company.
Navi
He then founded Navi, a financial services group offering loans, insurance and mutual funds, investing much of his own money in it.
