Prabhas is a Telugu film actor who became one of India’s biggest stars by playing the title role in S. S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali films. He has since headlined large pan-Indian productions such as Saaho, Salaar and the science-fiction epic Kalki 2898 AD.
Biography
Early career
Prabhas comes from a film family: his father U. Suryanarayana Raju was a producer and his uncle Krishnam Raju a well-known actor and politician. He made his debut in Eeswar (2002) and had his first big hit with Varsham (2004), followed by Chatrapathi (2005), directed by S. S. Rajamouli, and Mirchi (2013).
Baahubali
Prabhas committed about five years to Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), playing both a legendary king and his son. The films’ success across India made him a national star and a symbol of the rise of South Indian cinema.
Pan-Indian films
His later films have been made on large budgets for audiences across languages: the action thriller Saaho (2019), the period romance Radhe Shyam (2022), the mythological Adipurush (2023), Prashanth Neel’s Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (2023) and Nag Ashwin’s science-fiction epic Kalki 2898 AD (2024), with Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone.
Off screen
Known for a private life and a reputation for generosity on set, Prabhas has been nicknamed “Darling” by fans after one of his films. A wax figure of him as Baahubali was unveiled at Madame Tussauds in Bangkok.
