S. S. Rajamouli is a film director known for large-scale action epics that broke the language barriers of Indian cinema. His Baahubali films became national phenomena, and RRR won worldwide acclaim, with its song “Naatu Naatu” winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Biography

Telugu hits

A run of successful action dramas — Simhadri (2003), Chatrapathi (2005), Vikramarkudu (2006) and Yamadonga (2007) — was followed by the reincarnation epic Magadheera (2009) and Eega (2012), an inventive revenge story told from the point of view of a reincarnated housefly.

Baahubali

Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), starring Prabhas, were made in Telugu and Tamil and dubbed into other languages. The second became one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever and showed that South Indian films could dominate the national box office.

A family of storytellers

Rajamouli is the son of screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, who has co-written many of his films, and a cousin of composer M. M. Keeravani, who scores them. He began in television, directing the Telugu soap opera Santhi Nivasam, before his first feature, Student No. 1 (2001).

RRR and global recognition

RRR (2022), a fictional story of two revolutionaries played by N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, became a hit with audiences around the world. Its song “Naatu Naatu”, composed by Keeravani, won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2023. Rajamouli received the Padma Shri in 2016.

Why they matter

Rajamouli broke the language barrier in Indian cinema. Before Baahubali, Telugu films were rarely seen outside the South; afterwards, audiences across India — and then, with RRR, around the world — embraced them. His formula combines mythic storytelling with spectacle and simple, powerful emotions, and his success encouraged producers to plan “pan-Indian” releases in several languages at once. The rise of Telugu and Kannada films such as Pushpa and KGF in the national box office owes a great deal to the road he paved.
