Biography

Flying

Born in Paris to a Parsi father and French mother, JRD fell in love with flying as a boy. In 1929 he received India’s first commercial pilot licence, and on 15 October 1932 he flew a Puss Moth from Karachi to Bombay carrying mail — the first flight of Tata Airlines.

Air India

Tata Airlines became Air India in 1946 and was nationalised in 1953, with JRD remaining its chairman until 1978. He insisted on high standards of punctuality and service, and Air India gained a reputation as one of the world’s best airlines.

Chairman

JRD became chairman of Tata Sons in 1938, aged 34, and led the group for 53 years, during which it grew from 14 companies to nearly a hundred, including Tata Consultancy Services, Titan, Tata Motors and Tata Chemicals. He was known for his integrity in an era of licences and controls.

Institutions and honours

He helped found the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the National Centre for the Performing Arts and the Tata Memorial Hospital, and supported family planning. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 1955 and the Bharat Ratna in 1992, and died in Geneva on 29 November 1993.
