Jamsetji Tata was the founder of the Tata Group and is often called the father of Indian industry. He built textile mills and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and planned India’s first steel plant, hydroelectric power and a research institute, which his sons completed after his death in 1904.

Biography

A Parsi trader

Jamsetji was born in Navsari into a family of Parsi priests; his father moved to Bombay to trade. After studying at Elphinstone College he joined his father’s export business, travelling to China, England and Japan, and in 1868 started his own trading company.

Mills and a hotel

In 1877 he opened the Empress Mills in Nagpur, which became known for modern machinery and for treating workers well, with pensions and accident compensation. In 1903 he opened the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Bombay, one of the first buildings in the city with electricity.

Grand plans

Jamsetji dreamt of three great projects for India: a steel plant, hydroelectric power and a world-class science institute. He did not live to see them, but his sons founded the Tata Iron and Steel Company in Jamshedpur in 1907, Tata hydroelectric companies, and the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1909, for which he had pledged much of his fortune.

Legacy

He died in Bad Nauheim, Germany, on 19 May 1904. The city of Jamshedpur is named after him. In 2021 a ranking of philanthropists by Hurun and EdelGive placed him first in the world over the past century.
